"1,000,000" is a song by R.E.M. written by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe. It is listed as the opening track to the band's 1982 debut EP Chronic Town on the sleeve, although it is actually the fourth track due to to an error mixing up side one and side two.
It was also released as a B-side to the "Talk About The Passion" single in 1983 (from the band's debut LP Murmur).
The song was featured in the 1982 sci-fi film Strange Invaders, being heard playing on a radio as a dog laps up a can of beer.
Live versions[]
Numerous live versions of "1,000,000" have made their way onto various releases. The second disc of Murmur: Deluxe Edition contains most of a live show recorded at Larry's Hideaway, Toronto, Canada on July 9, 1983 and includes the song in the encore. The band's following show, at The Paradise Theater, Boston on July 13, 1983, had "1,000,000" as the last song of the first encore.[1] The final three songs of this encore were released on the limited edition bonus disc of And I Feel Fine… The Best of the I.R.S Years 1982–1987 in 2006. In 2009, another live version was released on Live At The Olympia, as part of the five-night live rehearsals that took place at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin between June 30 and July 5, 2007.
