Fables of the Reconstruction, R.E.M.'s third album, was released in 1985. It featured a darker and distinctly Southern sound that distinguished it from the previous two albums in the R.E.M. catalogue. It also sold the most records out of any of their albums up to that point, selling 300,000 copies.

The album reached 28 on the U. S. Billboard 200 and was certified gold.
